GFD calls for implementation of the Disability Act 715

The Ghana Federation of the Disabled (GFD) has urged the government to implement the Disability Act 715 to ensure inclusive government.

These concerns were raised during a press conference to commemorate the National Disability Day on 23rd June, at the Accra Rehabilitation Centre.

Joseph Adu-Buapong, the president of the Federation said “the GFD has sought financial and logistic support from donor entities to run sensitization programmes for persons with disabilities, government officials, duty bearers, service providers and the general public to educate them about the implications of the Act”.

Additionally, about two thousand copies of the Act, the president emphasized, have been distributed to stakeholders and the general public to ensure full understanding of the knowledge of the Act.

Mr. Adu-Boampong noted that the federation is using the occasion to remind the government, service providers, duty bearers and the general public that the disability law is operational and that it imposes obligations on everyone.

In about a two page-document on impact assessment conducted by GFD on how the provisions of the Act are being complied with, Mr Adu-Boampong noted that several provisions of the Act covering areas such as free education for PWDs, accessible environment, transportation etc are not being implemented.

This situation, the statement indicated, is contrary to the Act because the provision seeks to ensure inclusion of PWDs in national development.

“It is hoped that the government and all the relevant stakeholders will expedite action in making available the legislative instruments to give motion to the execution of the provisions of the Act” the statement emphasized.

  2. This is a good move to implement the act to let it work as a tool to back PWDs in the country.
